Subtle Celebrity Anti-aging Treatments
The saying goes that pretty much everyone has been “under the knife” or “under the needle”. While there is a fair amount of bad aesthetic work out there, celebrities often undergo subtle natural-looking non-surgical treatments to turn back the clock, or at least slow its march forward!
One very common technique is Botox Cosmetic injections to treat wrinkle formation. This injectable treatment is made by the company Allergan and is FDA-approved. I inject it most commonly in the forehead and around the eyes. Botox mostly prevents new wrinkles from forming by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause them. However, it also erases existing fine lines because the forehead fully relaxes. I customize to each patient’s needs the amount of Botox injected so that the patient looks relaxed but not fully “frozen”. It is important for the patient to still be able to articulate their eyebrows to some degree while creating facial expressions. This treatment lasts for three to four months and is very popular among celebrities and non-celebrities alike!
In addition, celebrities make heavy use of several great fillers to treat age-related fat loss and descent. Unlike Botox® Cosmetic which paralyzes muscles to prevent wrinkle formation, these treatments “fill” in age-related lines and furrows. These treatments are also FDA-approved and can create the effect of aging backward. Juvederm fills in the lines, called the nasolabial folds around the mouth, and Voluma, a dermal filler for cheek augmentation, helps reverse age-related loss of cheek fullness and mid-face flattening and descent. I believe Voluma is heavily used by celebrities to maintain full, youthful looking cheeks.
There are also non-surgical options to improve skin quality, which is responsible for a significant percentage of our perception of youth, health, and beauty. Various laser resurfacing treatments including Fraxel and Clear and Brilliant can make a big difference in removing sun damage, age spots, and fine wrinkles. It also helps to boost the level of collagen in the skin, which in turn stimulates the growth of new cells. Additionally, microneedling either with or without platelet rich plasma (PRP) can effectively address similar skin issues and boost collagen production. It is likely that a celebrity with luminous-looking skin may have undergone some form of these treatments.
