Dr. Zuckerman can help you address a “gummy smile” where the gums above the teeth are visible during facial animation by injecting a combination of Botox Cosmetic and a Hyaluronic Acid filler such as Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. The Botox injections are used to weaken the muscles that pull the lips upward during a smile, and the Juvederm filler is used to slightly augment the thickness of the upper lip to hide the gums. Dr. Zuckerman uses 4-6 units of Botox Cosmetic total and part of a vial of Juvederm for this treatment.
Key Aspects of Treatment

Gummy Smile Treatment Recommended Regimen
Most patients require two treatments per year to maintain a continual effect.
Gummy Smile Treatment Longevity
Treatment is partially visible immediately and sets in within one week. The dermal filler will last longer than the Botox injections. Therefore some of the result will remain apparent for up to one six to nine months. Results will vary per individual and by the amount of product injected.
Gummy Smile Treatment Procedure Time
10 – 20 minutes per treatment
Gummy Smile Treatment Pretreatment Guidelines
Dr. Zuckerman recommends patients take the following precautions before undergoing treatment for a gummy smile to minimize bruising: no NSAIDs such aspirin or ibuprofen within a couple days before a day after, don’t drink alcohol to excess a day before and a day before, refraining from lying flat or working out within 2 hours after injection.
Gummy Smile Treatment Recovery (Downtime)
This treatment involves little to no downtime, and patients often return to work immediately after workday treatment. There may be slight bleeding or redness at the injection sites, but these will resolve within a few hours.
Gummy Smile Treatment Associated Risks
These injectables are overwhelmingly safe, especially when performed by an expert injector such as Dr. Zuckerman. However, this treatment is a more advanced dermal filler technique, and it is best to visit a board-certified plastic surgeon who knows the sensitive anatomy of the lower face. Possible complications, although rare, include:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Temporary numbness
- Drooping or sagging of the upper lip
