Microneedling makes microscopic punctures through the outer layers of skin, which stimulates the body’s healing mechanism and collagen production. This helps address fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, scarring, and other aesthetic skin issues.
Microneedling is one of the most popular recent trends in medical beauty and is used to perform facial rejuvenation. The microneedling device contains multiple fine needles that create tiny punctures in the upper layers of the skin. These tiny wounds trigger the body’s healing mechanism and the production of collagen and elastin, which both decline as we age. Collagen and elastin are largely responsible for maintaining youthful firmness, skin smoothness and texture consistency, and microneedling is an effective method to stimulate production. In addition, the treatment is relatively painless, because Dr. Zuckerman applies a topical anesthetic, or numbing cream, prior to start. As detailed below, microneedling’s popularity also comes from its convenience: treatment requires little to no downtime. Treatment typically involves three rounds over the entire facial area, but it is customized to each patient with increased focus on problem areas. Patients can undergo microneedling treatment directly with Dr. Zuckerman or with a member of his certified medical professional staff.
While research is still being conducted on the efficacy of microneedling, Dr. Zuckerman has seen good treatment results for the addressable conditions below. Several of these issues are also addressable via laser skin resurfacing treatments, and Dr. Zuckerman can help you decide which form of treatment may best suit you.
Because microneedling induces collagen production, treatment can address fine lines and wrinkles formed as a result of aging or due to sun damage.
Increased collagen production resulting from microneedling can also address pigmentation issues, which are typically also due to aging or sun damage.
Similar to the above, skin dullness, texture irregularities, lack of firmness or overly large pores can also be treated via microneedling. Overly large pores in particular may appear as a result of declining collagen and excess skin cells or debris, which are effectively addressed with this treatment.
Stretch marks are actually tears in the fascia, connective tissue below the skin. As a result, microneedling does not directly address them but has shown some efficacy in improving the condition of the skin above them and therefore their overall appearance. However, results vary by individual and may not fully eliminate the problem. Dr. Zuckerman can recommend a customized treatment regimen depending on the severity of these issues.
Microneedling can be effective at improving the appearance of acne scars and can help patients regain self-esteem. Results vary by individual and require several treatments.
This treatment combination is among the most popular uses for microneedling and involves platelet rich plasma (PRP) rubbed over the treatment area between rounds of microneedling.
Dr. Zuckerman performs a microneedling treatment on the forehead of a patient to address fine lines and wrinkles and skin texture issues.
Depending on the aesthetic issues to be treated, Dr. Zuckerman may recommend regular treatments every six months or a series of 4-6 treatements spaced a few weeks apart.
Treatment results last three to six months but vary by individual.
Approximately 30 minutes
Dr. Zuckerman advises patients to avoid irritants, such as retinoids, or exfoliants for several days before and after treatment. The skin will also be more sensitive after treatment, and Dr. Zuckerman advises patients to use high SPF skincare.
Microneedling involves little recovery time, and typically patients do not require time off from work. Skin may appear slightly red for 24-48 hours after treatment, but this should resolve. Most patients are able to wear makeup the following day.
Microneedling is minimally invasive and involves few risks when performed correctly in a sterile medical environment. However, possible risks include bruising, infection, scarring or pigmentation issues. Please inform Dr. Zuckerman if you are prone to keloid scar formation, hyperpigmentation, or have other skin conditions prior to treatment. He will be able to discuss your options.
There are some microneedling products for retail use that allow you to perform the procedure at home, but the needles used in the medical professional Rejuvapen device are generally longer than those in retail procedures and puncture deeper in the skin’s surface. These deeper punctures increase the effectiveness and rejuvenative capabilities of the procedure beyond what is possible with a retail appartus.
