Before and after comparison of a patient of Dr. Zuckerman’s in New York City who underwent lip augmentation. Patient treated with 0.8cc Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, 0.5cc for the upper lip, 0.3cc for lower lip. Patient pictured on the day of treatment.
Juvederm is an injectable filler made of Hyalorunic Acid (HA), which is a natural substance in the body’s tissues. This type of dermal filler is very popular, and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is the high end in the line of products manufactured by Allergan. Juvederm injections are performed predominantly on the face to restore low volume due to aging or to augment certain facial structures including the lips, nasolabial folds, and temples. Hyaluronic Acid injectable fillers differ in the HA particle size, variation, and the cross-linking of the HA molecules which contributes viscosity, compressability, and longevity. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is more highly cross-linked and is therefore a longer lasting injectable filler. The manufacturer of the injectable, Allergan, makes two versions Juvederm Ultra Plus and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. The latter contains the anesthetic lidocaine to help decrease any pain or discomfort from the Juvederm injections for the patient. In addition, Dr. Zuckerman applies a second topical anesthetic before treatment to sensitive areas like the lips to make treatment virtually painless for the patient. Dr. Zuckerman is an expert injector of Juvederm and is well known for his lip augmentation and nasolabial folds (the “parentheses” around the mouth) rejuvenation.
As a note, Allergan, the maker of Juvederm, has an entire family of Hyalorunic Acid fillers confusingly named Juvederm >product name<. These are typically referred to by their product name only. All are relatively similar but are specially formulated for different areas of the face and types of lines, folds or wrinkles:
A competitor to these products is the Restylane line of Hyaluronic Acid fillers.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Zuckerman has hundreds of hours of injectables experience andis an expert injector of Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. In his practice in New York City, the most commonly requested treatments using this injectable include:
Filling in the parentheses, or folds, around the mouth is a very common use of Juvederm

Another common application of dermal fillers is cheek augmentation & fillers. Often, Dr. Zuckerman recommends a filler other than Juvederm, for example Voluma, for treatment of the cheeks.

Treatment results are seen immediately and last 4 months to 1 year, depending upon injection site.
Dr. Zuckerman’s dermal filler injections with Juvederm are quick and involve little recovery time. Patients typically return to work immediately after a daytime appointment. Some patients may experience bruising for one to two days after treatment, but Dr. Zuckerman is typically able to minimize this.
To minimize the risk of mild post-treatment bruising, Dr. Zuckerman recommends that patients avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, and excessive alcohol for a one to two days before and after treatment. However, if these guidelines are not met, treatment will most likely still be successful. Please inquire if to Dr. Zuckerman if you think you may not be able to undergo treatment due to one of these issues.
Juvederm Ultra is the sister product to Juvederm Ultra Plus, and Dr. Zuckerman prefers to use Juvederm Ultra Plus as it is thicker, longer lasting, and is able to address more severe wrinkles and folds.
The two products have the exact same formula, except that Juvederm Ultra Plus XC also contains the anesthetic lidocaine, an anesthetic, which eliminates most discomfort for the patient. Dr. Zuckerman prefers the XC modularity for that reason.
Juvederm treatments are not painful due to Dr. Zuckerman’s efforts. He uses modalities of the Juvederm product line that include an anesthetic to make the injections more comfortable and also applies a second topical anesthetic before treatment so that the patient feels little to no discomfort during injections.
If you visit Zuckerman Plastic Surgery for your injectable treatment, you can be certain that Dr. Zuckerman will recommend and perform the best treatment option for you in a safe and comfortable manner. In general, the use of injectable fillers has become so widespread that unfortunately one must actively seek out a board-certified physician. Dr. Zuckerman recommends you visit a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for these injections (if you aren’t able to visit Zuckerman Plastic Surgery!). In New York City, many medical offices will by default offer injections by a registered nurse or physician’s assistant (PA). These injectors are required to be overseen by a physician, but Dr. Zuckerman recommends that you confirm with the office ahead of time that there is a physician on the premises and inquire to what degree the physician actually oversees the injector’s activities.
Yes, these fillers are overwhelmingly safe. The most common “risk” is that patients is dissatisfaction with their injector’s result, so it is important to visit an experienced injector such as a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Zuckerman. Any result with lumps, bumps, or unevenness is likely to make you the patient unhappy. There is very low risk that a patient may be allergic to the Hyaluronic Acid filler, in which case a board-certified physician’s office will be able to apply a treatment to reverse the filler. This possible allergy is the main reason a patient should visit a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for treatment.
Looking overdone is largely due to overdosing by the injector or injections in suboptimal locations. Dr. Zuckerman specializes in beautiful, natural-looking results and is an expert injector. As long as you trust your injector’s skill and judgement, you will look great.
