Buttock augmentation is an increasingly popular treatment in Dr. Zuckerman’s practice due to changing aesthetic ideals in the shape and prominence of the buttocks. Surgical buttock augmentation, or the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), is one of Dr. Zuckerman’s most popular procedures and involves the removal of fat from the abdomen and other areas via liposuction, which is then grafted to the buttocks. However, for those not ready to undergo a surgical procedure, buttock injections with the filler Sculptra Aesthetic may be a good option. This injectable induces the body to make its own collagen in the targeted areas and will naturally and gradually add volume after injection. Dr. Zuckerman recommends a set of multiple treatments set a few weeks apart. This treatment may be a good option for those who have limited fat to harvest for fat grafting or who desire a mild augmentation. Non-surgical buttock augmentation can also address more localized aesthetic issues such as the appearance of dimples or divots. However, the amount of possible augmentation is limited with the non-surgical approach, and while the effect is among the most long-lasting of non-surgical injectable treatments, it is not permanent. In addition, non-surgical buttock injections are more expensive than the surgical option.
Dr. Zuckerman recommends an initial set of three treatments each spaced four to six weeks apart. Afterward, patients may be able to undergo a follow-up set of three treatments once every two to three years, but results do vary.
Treatment is visible immediately but takes four to six weeks to fully set in. After the initial three treatments, results last up to three years.
45 – 60 minutes per treatment
Dr. Zuckerman recommends patients take the following precautions before undergoing non-surgical buttock augmentation filler injections to minimize bruising: no NSAIDs such aspirin or ibuprofen within a couple days before a day after, don’t drink alcohol to excess a day before and a day before, refraining from lying flat or working out within 2 hours after injection.
This treatment involes little to no downtime, but Dr. Zuckerman will recommend that you minimize contact with the new buttocks for a period of time after the treatment.
Sculptra injections are overwhelmingly safe, especially when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Zuckerman. While injectable treatments are commonplace, non-surgical buttock augmentation injections with filler is a more advanced, “off-label” technique. It is best to visit a board-certified plastic surgeon and expert injector like Dr. Zuckerman to avoid complications with nearby anatomical structures. Minor, and rare, risks include:
Note, however, that there is an increasing trend of patients undergoing black market butt injections, possibly in a non-medical or unsterile environment. Such treatment is an illegal act by the practitioner who performs it, and no substance outside of FDA-approved injectables, not even medical-grade silicone, is safe for injection into the buttocks and can lead to serious complications or even death.
Dr. Zuckerman will discuss with you before starting treatment the level of augmentation you desire. Minimal augmentation or enhancement of the appearance of dimpled skin in the buttocks may only require 4-5 vials of Sculptra. However, a larger augmentation can require up to 20 vials. For context, facial treatments with this injectable generally require one vial or two vials maximum.
