Minimal Downtime with Rapid Recovery Weekend Liposuction
Many patients want to minimize their downtime or days taken off from work when undergoing cosmetic surgery with Dr. Zuckerman. For liposuction especially, Dr. Zuckerman has devised methods to minimize downtime and quicken recovery. While this rapid recovery does depend on the extent of liposuction performed and will vary by patient, Dr. Zuckerman can often offer the procedure on a Thursday or even a Friday and have the patient back to work by Monday.
The surgical process would proceed as follows:
- Thursday: The patient would undergo surgery on Thursday afternoon in Dr. Zuckerman’s accredited in-office operating room facility in Manhattan. The procedure lasts typically less than two hours and can be performed under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
- Thursday Post-Procedure: The patient recovers in the operating suite’s recovery room for approximately one hour. This allows the effects of anesthesia to diminish, and Dr. Zuckerman and his staff then issue postoperative care instructions. Typically the patient remains until they can eat and drink, urinate and are able to walk.
- Thursday Evening: Patients either depart to home or if traveling from out of town to a hotel arranged by Dr. Zuckerman’s staff. In either case, the patient will need an escort to accompany them. If needed, Dr. Zuckerman’s staff can arrange for a private duty nurse to perform this escort. Typically speaking, no overnight nurse is needed after liposuction.
- Friday through Sunday: The patient then recovers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday taking narcotic pain medication prescribed by Dr. Zuckerman as needed to minimize postoperative discomfort.
- Monday: By Monday, the patient has weaned off narcotic pain medication and returns to work. Ibuprofen is taken if needed. It is possible that there will be some discomfort on Monday, and this recovery regimen does require the patient to have a minimally physically intensive job.
This rapid recovery liposuction regimen is great, because it minimizes workplace downtime for the patient to a single day. The procedure could even be performed on Friday for more minimal liposuction. Dr. Zuckerman recently had a patient who traveled from Boston and underwent significant liposuction of the abdomen, flanks, lower back and thighs – four liters in total, which is significant – and was able to return to work on Monday in Boston. Individual results do vary however, and this recovery regimen may not be suited for all patients.
