SMOOTH VERSUS TEXTURED BREAST IMPLANTS

Both smooth and textured breast implants are FDA-approved. Dr. Zuckerman uses smooth breast implants in most of his breast augmentations, but recommends that you discuss your preference with him at your consultation.

Dr. Zuckerman generally recommends that patients select smooth implants for their breast augmentation, but textured implants are thought to have a lower risk of position changes for shaped implants and possibly lower the risk of capsular contracture. As a result, they are sometimes used in breast augmentation revision surgery. However, somewhat recently a very rare cancer known as Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) has been known to occur with textured implants as well. The incidence of this cancer is extremely low for any kind of breast implant, but textured implants have been associated with more cases. The choice of implant style does not have a large effect on the breast augmentation outcome. Both kinds are FDA-approved and both are made by all three major breast implant manufacturers. As your surgeon, Dr. Zuckerman is happy to use either type and will make a recommendation to you based on the specifics of your anatomy and medical history. Then after discussion of your goals, together you will finalize your choice.
