Quick, Effective Defense Against Aging: Periodic Botox Treatments
Since its approval by the FDA in 1989 for some conditions and in 2002 for vertical lines between the eyebrows, injectable treatment Botox has become the single most popular injectable treatment with over 7,000,000 treatments performed in 2017 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. There is no mystery to Botox: by temporarily paralyzing targeted muscles of the face, it is quick and effective defense against the formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and furrows.
Treatments are Quick and Not Surgical
Botox is not “plastic surgery” in the traditional sense. It is an injectable treatment Dr. Zuckerman performs with a very small gauge needle that as an expert lasts under five minutes. It is simple, personal maintenance on the order of getting one’s hair done. The treatment result lasts for three to four months and takes seven days to fully set in. Dr. Zuckerman can make treatment relatively painless by applying a numbing cream, although the needle is one of the smallest gauges available, so most patients don’t even require a topical anesthetic. Many of Dr. Zuckerman’s patients work in midtown Manhattan and come in for a lunch-time appointment. There is no downtime or recovery after this treatment, and patients generally return to work immediately after. While the treatment may cause slight, temporary redness at the injection sites for a few hours, patients are free to reapply any makeup before leaving the office. In the video below, you can see Dr. Zuckerman’s injections in action as he performs this treatment for an actual patient.
Effective at Addressing Lines and Wrinkles
If you’ve never undergone Botox treatment before, you may not understand how effective it is. Existing lines and wrinkles will fully relax and disappear for the most part. Popular areas for treatment in my practice include injections to the forehead to address transverse (horizontal) lines, vertical lines between the brows, sagging of the lateral portion of the brows, Crow’s feet, and more. Over years of proactive maintenance, patients can prolong the formation of lines and wrinkles by decades, although results do vary from patient to patient. There is even medical research to support the preventative nature of Botox treatment.
Neuromodulator Treatments are Safe
As mentioned, Botox has been approved for almost three decades in some capacity, and a similar competitor product Dysport has been approved since 2009. In 2011, a third product Xeomin also gained its approval, which has recently gained more attention with Christie Brinkley as its spokesperson. With over 7,000,000 treatments performed per year, these three neuromodulators are overwhelmingly safe. However, I urge you to consider undergoing treatment with a board-certified plastic surgeon like myself to ensure that it is performed safely and in sterile medical conditions. I am often asked by prospective patients to correct issues left by other practitioners who may not be as aware of facial anatomy as a surgeon like myself. Unfortunately, this is the price of Botox’s success: its use has spread well beyond the plastic surgery field with which it originated. This risk is easily avoidable though with a visit to Zuckerman Plastic Surgery!
