Dr. Zuckerman can perform a special pattern of Botox Cosmetic injections to reduce fullness of the face. The masseter muscles are the large muscles that move the jaw. Using a musculoparalytic, the goal is to weaken and shrink them, to make them less prominent; they are not paralyzed. This treatment is for patients who have a round lower face or square jaw and want a more delicate “heart shaped” face. It helps create a subtle more sculpted look, emphasizing the cheekbones. This treatment is quick but Dr. Zuckerman uses precise facial measurement on the face before performing it. Lines are drawn on the patient’s face to demarcate the muscle: a horizontal line from tragus of the ear to corner of the mouth and a vertical straight down from the lateral corner of the eye. The muscle targeted is behind the vertical line and below the horizontal line. This muscle is thick and located deep; it runs between the zygomatic arch and the mandible (jaw bone), and is one of the 2 major muscles that close the mouth during chewing.
Most patients require three to four treatments per year to maintain a continual effect.
Treatment takes approximately one week to set in and lasts three to four months.
10 – 20 minutes per treatment
Dr. Zuckerman recommends patients take the following precautions before undergoing facial slimming treatment to minimize bruising: no NSAIDs such aspirin or ibuprofen within a couple days before a day after, don’t drink alcohol to excess a day before and a day before, refraining from lying flat or working out within 2 hours after injection.
This treatment involves little to no downtime, and patients often return to work immediately after treatment. There may be slight bleeding or redness at the injection sites, but these will resolve within a few hours.
This treatment is overwhelmingly safe when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Zuckerman, who is aware of the anatomy in the area. However, the masseter muscles are located deep in the tissue of the face and must be precisely targeted. Unwanted complications may arise from an unskilled injector placing Botox incorrectly and may include numbness or temporary paralysis or structures in the lower face.
